Whitefish + the Meadow

There aren’t many things more relaxing than waking up to the sound of raindrops pattering on the roof of your cozy cabin nestled deep in the middle of nowhere. As comforting as that moment was, we were disappointed that the forecast indicated a drizzly day. However, we realized that this weather made for a fairly relaxing and guilt-free day of shopping/drinking/eating in downtown Whitefish and so we headed out after slowly rolling out of bed.

A little more about the cabin: it was small, very quaint and one of the most relaxing places I’ve ever stayed in. We rent through VRBO whenever we travel and have never been let down… but this cabin was special because it came with friends! The owner, Mary, lived on a beautifully secluded 100+ acre property miles away from town with her two pups, Snickers (an old and lovable black lab who is an expert at procuring treats) and Dyson (cute, small, younger brother, very alert and friendly little guy). They announced their arrival on our porch every morning by making little sounds until we opened the door to say hello.

Lake McDonald + the Sperry Trailhead

Day 1 in Montana, June 23, 2016.

Leading up to our trip I had made a “Glacier Bucket List” and presented it to Elliot along with unbelievable pictures to back them up. It was actually pretty difficult to narrow things down, what with just six days and 1,012,837 acres of park to explore. We had to choose our stops wisely.

It just so happened that one of those stops, Lake McDonald, was very close to the West entrance of the park. We ventured into Glacier around 4pm on our first full day in Montana (June 23, 2016). Before stopping by the lake, we decided to see what trails were nearby. Turns out we were right by the Sperry Trailhead which led to a daunting hike I had read about called the Mt Brown Trail. Feeling ambitious, we took off on our first hike in the park. I wish I could say we conquered Mt Brown that night, but the sun was on its way down and there was no way we would make it all the way up before sunset.

West-bound

I can’t believe that it’s been almost three months post-Montana. Elliot and I haven’t slowed down since coming home which is why I am just now getting to write about our trip. During our week in the beautiful Rockies we logged ~50 miles of hiking on our boots and over 1,200 miles on the rental car.

Anyway, I’d like to make it known that this was our first big hiking trip out West so we’re not pros by any means. We are, however, ambitious and wanted to get in as many sights as possible and push ourselves physically. I’m sharing my experiences in hopes that this can be a resource to others who are in the same boat and just want to get out there and experience some gorgeous trails. On a flight back from LA I happened to make friends with a woman and her husband who are experienced hikers (on their way back to the East coast from hiking in Yosemite, coincidentally) and I really appreciated the advice she shared with me from her travels. Brussels + Tofu

So plain, yet so much potential

A few nights ago I was sipping on Cabernet and wrapping wontons with one of my best friends when it finally dawned on me… cooking is a lot like crafting.  I like both to be aesthetically pleasing while also being of substance. And they’re both fun. It’s the care put into each step that makes something truly awesome in the end. This realization made me think, “Man… if I treat cooking like a DIY tutorial, I can make anything.”

And then the wine buzz wore off and I realized that ingredients like “pork rind jelly” (thanks, Emily!) still freak me the heck out. Not because I wouldn’t eat it (please), I just don’t know where to find such a thing. I mean the Asian store for sure, but I’d be in way over my head. My word of advice to fellow novice cooks… start with simple recipes and work your way up or you’ll psych yourself out like I tend to do.

Welcome to my first post! I’ve been wanting to start a blog because time is flying by at such a fast pace that it takes alarmingly long for me to even remember what I ate for breakfast yesterday. I place a majority of the blame on the hectic nature of life these days (most of the time it seems I’m not fully “present” but just going through the motions), so I’m hoping that this blog will force me to focus.
